2. Wollemia Urological Surgery

Design Brief

Doctor Ouyang’s dream was to build a modern Urological Surgery, with prestige features whilst maintaining a warm friendly environment for patients. The requirement was to convert the core of an existing domestic dwelling to a new state of the art medical practice. The site was purchased purely for its close proximity to North Gosford Private Hospital where the Doctor mainly practices.

The building was to contain a medical practice with facilities to include examination rooms, treatment area, staff amenities, reception area and ample workspace for 3 secretaries. Other requirements to include the accommodation for a secondary Doctor, provide ample off street parking as parking was a premium in the area. Good lighting at night and security was of concern, the surveillance of patients arriving and departing safely to be high priority. The building form was to be of modern appearance with low maintenance finishes.

Design Solution

The design solution required substantial refurbishment to the existing building, close to the point of demolition. Council’s codes stipulated “maintaining a residential street address”, which influenced the building’s final form.

Reconfiguring the existing floor layout, reversing the main entry to the rear became the ideal solution. This enabled full disability access to the building from the street. The existing street address is used as the secondary entrance for staff.

The functional layout is reflected throughout the building. Features include splashes of red, rich gold alucobond contrasted with split stone were all chosen to provide a prestige appearance. Upon entering the foyer draws you to a large reception and waiting room. Sliding partition wall in the staff room allows flexibility and adaptability of space for staff meetings. Other design features include soundproof glazing, raked ceilings throughout, highlight windows that provide visual links to the external environment whilst penetrating daylight throughout the building.
